Delhi Events

New Delhi is the capital of India, and in all essence, the capital of celebrations. Delhi welcomes all religions, communities and nationalities, allowing the festivities to be in great range and in great fun. New Delhi represents a lot of Hindu, Muslim and modern National gatherings. The festivities begin with the Punjabi event, Lohri, on the 13^th of January, celebrating the end of winter. It is complete with large parties of dancing and singing around bonfires. Makar Sankranti is held the day after on the 14^th of January as a Kite Festival. This annual event is held on the crisp, green lawns of Connaught Place, where colourful and original kites fly overhead, representing the talents of both national and international people. Spring welcomes the Basant Panchami (Festival of Spring), generally taking place in early February, along with the Thyagaraja Festival also in February. Held at the Vaikunthnath Temple, the Thyagaraja Festival presents classical South Indian music and dance performances for large audiences. In April, the anniversary of Amir Khusrau is celebrated with both a fruitful fair as well as the National Drama Festival, where creative plays take place. As the warm weather hits in July, the International Mango Festival is greatly welcomed by tourists and locals alike, with the opportunity to taste over 500 varieties of mangoes! The Phoolwalon Ki Sair (Flower Sellers Procession) marks the arrival of fall in early October, displaying a parade of people carrying decorated floral fans, which are considered holy after being blessed at the shrines of 13^th century saints. The beautiful procession ends at Jahaz Mahal, which is a 16^th century “pleasure resort.” Delhi Tourism organizes the modern-day Qutub Festival in October as well, which presents the nighttime performances of musicians and dancers. Following shortly after begin Delhi’s great Christian festivities during the Christmas and New Year season, with special, dedicated events set up all over the city.
